Windshield Replacement
Step 1 to 12:
Step 1 Assemble all tools and equipment needed. Preheat the adhesive pack(s) where necessary (refer to current Technical Data Sheets for individual products).
Step 2 Remove all decorative trims and mouldings, seals, fastenings and windshield wipers in accordance with the vehicle manufacturer's instructions. Before removing the old glass, protect vehicle bodywork against paint damage by masking adjacent areas with masking tape. The damaged glass may be removed with any of the following tools: electric trimming knife, cutting wire.
Step 3 Remove old glass with suction clamps.
Step 4 Trim back remaining adhesive bed on the windshield body flange to a depth of 1-2 mm to provide a sound, clean bond face for application of the new adhesive.
Step 5 Offer up new windscreen glass and check for fit. To ensure an optimum fit, we recommend that the glass be offered up before activating the bond face. Insert spacers as necessary and mark correct position of windscreen glass with masking tape.
Step 6 Make good any damage to paintwork caused by removal of old glass, using a quick-drying touch-up paint in the original vehicle colour. For minor paintwork damage we recommend the use of Sika® Primer-206 G+P. Caution: Do not paint over remaining traces of old adhesive.
Step 7 Preparation of windscreen body flange: clean off the bond face, using a clean, lint-free cloth moistened with Sika®-Activator. Sika®-Activator should be applied sparingly in a single operation; do not repeat application. Finish by wiping down with a clean, dry cloth. Drying time: 10 minutes (at 23ºC/50% r.h.).
Step 8 Preparation of windscreen glass: clean off the ceramic-coated bond face, using a clean, lint-free cloth moistened with Sika®-Activator. Sika®-Activator should be applied sparingly in a single operation; do not repeat application. Finish by wiping down with a clean, dry cloth. Drying time: 10 minutes (at 23 ºC/50% r.h.). Caution UV protection: In the case of replacement car windscreens supplied without a black ceramic-coated border or cover trims, Sika® Primer-206 G+P must be applied to the bond face after cleaning with Sika®-Activator. Apply a thin continuous coat of primer, using a brush, felt pad or applicator stick. Leave to dry for 10 minutes (at 23 ºC/50% r.h.). Polyurethane-coated glass: Apply Sika-Activator sparingly, then wipe down with a clean cloth. Leave to dry for 10 minutes (at 23 ºC/50% r.h.).
Step 9 Pierce membrane on cartridge of Sika windscreen adhesive and peel back completely. Insert cartridge in application gun. SikaTack®-Plus Booster: To use the Sika® Booster cure accelerator, insert preheated SikaTack®-Plus cartridge in application gun, remove Sika® Booster pack from bag and screw on to the end of the cartridge.
Step 10 Apply a triangular bead of Sika® windscreen adhesive to the edge of the glass or the windscreen body flange, using the specially shaped nozzle supplied with the product. Caution: Refer to vehicle manufacturer’s specification and adjust application to depth of windscreen body flange. Trim nozzle if necessary.
Step 11 The new windscreen must be placed in position within 10 minutes of applying the Sika® windscreen adhesive. Apply light pressure all round perimeter of glass to ensure good contact with the adhesive bed. Keep vehicle doors and side windows open throughout glass installation.
Step 12 Refit trims and mouldings. Remove any excess adhesive before it hardens, using Sikaflex®-Remover 208.
